Cebu Port Authority reduces wharfage fees by 50%
Wednesday, 30 September 2009

In a show of support to the Cebu export industry, the Cebu Port Authority (CPA), in its resolution No. 424-2009, has announced the reduction of wharfage fees in its letter dated September 25, 2009 addressed to Philexport Cebu.

Cebu-based exporters will enjoy a 50% discount on wharfage fees starting October 1, 2009 until December 31, 2009. A similar 50% reduction on wharfage fees was approved by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in Manila early last month.

Philexport Cebu applauded the action of the CPA who has always been supportive of the exporters, calling the move a big relief for the exporters who have since the start of the year been reeling from the effects of the global financial crisis.

After the news that the PPA has reduced it wharfage rates in Manila, Philexport Cebu Executive Director Fred Escalona immediately wrote a letter on August 24, 2009 to Cebu Port Authority General Manager Angelo C. Verdan requesting the CPA to also accord the same benefits to Cebu exporters. The current wharfage fee for a 20 footer van is P602.34 while the rate for a 40 footer van is 956.70. These amounts will be cut in half starting October 1, 2009 until end of this year.

Angelo C. Verdan, CPA General Manager in his letter to Philexport Cebu said that the  CPA hopes that they have shown their support to the local export industry in Central Visayas, with the approval of the substantial reduction in wharfage rates.
