US alarmed at Chinese-made children’s jewelry with toxic metal

US consumers are alarmed by the presence of toxic metal cadmium in children’s jewelry sold in big chain stores like Walmart. Several laboratory tests organized by the Associated Press were made on 103 pieces of Chinese-made children’s jewelry and 12% of it was found to contain at least 10% of the dangerous heavy metal cadmium.

Cadmium ranks No. 7 out of the 275 most hazardous substances in the priority list of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention. "There's nothing positive that you can say about this metal. It's a poison," said Bruce A.Fowler, a cadmium specialist and toxicologist.

There was speculation that Chinese manufacturers shifted to Cadmium as substitute to heavily regulated metals in the US such as lead because of the new US law called “Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008”.
