GTH exports show growth from 2004 | Print |  E-mail

Total world exports for gifts, toys and houseware was around USD 36 billion in 2008, up by 16% from USD 31.5 billion in 2004. Exports were constantly growing in modest amounts from 2004 to 2008 where yearly growth rate averaged 4% for that period. Highest level was achieved in 2007 when it reached 7%. See table 1 below.




Major exporting countries

China was the leading exporter in 2008 covering around 39% of the total world exports. Hongkong, Germany, Czech Republic and the United States collectively cover 29% of total for the same period. Other major exporting countries with less than 8% shares were Belgium, Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom and Italy.

Philippine exports
On the other hand, Philippine exports are constantly declining for the period of 2004 to 2008 (see table 2). Export value decreased to USD 95 million in 2008 from USD 119 million in 2004. Average growth rate for this period is minus 4% yearly. The growth in 2005 was cut short by the declines in 2006 to 2008.

The leading market for Philippine exports in 2008 was the United States, covering around almost half (44%) of total Philippine exports. Japan followed with 14% share.  Among the major destinations, South Korea is the fastest growing market for Philippine exports where growth averaged at 41% yearly for the period 2004 to 2008.

Philippine performance in 2009
In 2009, Philippine exports showed signs of recovery for some markets. The United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States reported a positive average growth for the three consecutive quarters in 2009 (see table 3).





Saleable product of Philippine exports in 2008
The most saleable product commodity of Philippine exports are basketwork, wickerwork of plaits etc, loofa article or those classified under HS 4602, comprising of about 44% of total export in 2008. Next were toys nesoi, scale models etc, puzzles, parts etc (HS 9503) and covering around 16% for the same period (see chart 1).
